Full Conversion of Terminal Operations to Automated Systems Can Take Up To 10 Years

Different approaches will decide the timelines for converting to automated operations

Delving further into automation of operations, TLME Future-Proof Technologies Conference moderator and CEO of Vespucci Maritime, Lars Jensen asked Dr Yvo Saanen, Director of Portwise, what was the usual timeline in making a fully functioning conventional terminal into a fully automated one.

Dr Saanen anwered saying one way of implementing automation was to change the equipment which requires a lot of civil works and operational disruptions and another way was to add technology on top of the existing machines.

The fastest time in which a significant portion of operations can be automated in the second way would be two years whereas to fully convert operations without major disruptions could take about 10 years, said Dr Saanen.
