Iran Promotes North-South Corridor for Reduced Transit Times and Cost
Iran is agressively promoting its North-South corridor route to global shippers.
At the recently held Russian International Transport Exhibition (Trans-Rasha) the vice president of shipping market development of the Islamic Republic of Iran Amir Bayat Turk, said the North-South Corridor was well received and a significant number of exporters and importers from Russia, China , India and Pakistan have expressed their desire to use this route.
The commonly used routes for sending goods from India to St. Petersburg, are about 14,500 km long while Iran's corridor reduces the distance to just 7,200 kilometers cutting transit time by 40% and transportation costs by 30%.
However, the costs of stoppage and insurance of cargoes in Iran need some degree of rationalisation.
The Iranian minister highlighted the use of the combined rail capacity with the purchase of 1,400 wagons in recent years. The time to move goods from Bandar Abbas to Darya Caspian has been reduced to four days, which is considered a national record.
