President Erdogan of Turkey has inaugurated Istanbul Airport, slated as the new world largest airport, fulfilling an aim of rendering Turkey a truly global player.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened the airport on the 95th anniversary of Turkey’s establishment as a republic following its war of independence.
Erdogan said that Turkey is now “...most important transit location on the north-south, east-west axes, connecting 60 countries and $20 trillion economies.
“With this airport, we are furthering our country’s key role in the integration of global economies.”
At present, the airport has opened to only minor traffic flows, but intends to extend to full capacity by the end of the year.
Once fully operational, the airport is expected to attract 90 million passengers per year in its first phase, and 200 million after a decade, doubling the levels of the world’s busiest airports at present.
