Sanad, Khalifa Univ. & Lufthansa Technik Lead Robotic Arm Tech Demo in Germany After UAE Trials
Sanad, a global leader in aerospace engineering and leasing solutions owned by Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment Company, has partnered with Khalifa University of Science and Technology and Lufthansa Technik Middle East (LTME) to innovate within robotic arm technology for the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry.
This collaboration has led to the successful demonstration of a pioneering robotic arm at LTME’s headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, marking a milestone in efficiency and innovation within the aviation sector.
The partnership with Khalifa University's Advanced Research and Innovation Center (ARIC) and LTME integrates artificial intelligence in MRO services. Together, they developed an automated chord measurement system that combines a robotic arm with laser profiling, promoting UAE’s aviation hub status.
By integrating advanced tools like AVIATAR, the technology enhances efficiency and accuracy, providing a significant step forward for MRO processes globally.
This technology is the UAE’s first aerospace R&D initiative of its kind, tested rigorously over 18 months. Developed by Sanad's R&D team and Khalifa University’s ARIC, the project involved UAE National students, PhD researchers, and faculty members.
After extensive testing at ARIC and Sanad, the perfected system is now set for operational use in Sanad's MRO processes, reflecting a collaborative push towards innovation and talent development in aviation.
Following successful trials in the UAE, further tests were conducted in Hamburg for laser analysis capabilities in MRO, underscoring the UAE’s influence in cutting-edge aviation technology. This advancement is expected to transform aircraft maintenance, reducing repair times, optimizing efficiency, and offering substantial cost savings and improved aircraft availability.
His Excellency Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, remarked: "Our collaboration with Sanad and Lufthansa Technik Middle East has paved the way for a transformative automated chord measurement system, boosting precision by tenfold and enhancing component repair turnaround by 35%. The robotic arm, now under further testing in Germany, demonstrates the UAE’s potential for impactful academic-industry collaborations in the MRO sector. By involving students and faculty, we’re equipping local talent for global success while strengthening the UAE’s standing in aviation excellence.”
Mansoor Janahi, Managing Director and Group CEO of Sanad, noted: "This partnership signifies a strategic move in Sanad’s innovation strategy and highlights the impact of academia-industry alliances in aviation. With Khalifa University and Lufthansa Technik Middle East, we are setting new standards in aircraft maintenance, driving efficiencies that benefit the global aviation sector.”
