Dammam's King Abdulaziz Port Achieves Record Container Throughput

King Abdulaziz Port witnesses continuous expansion of its infrastructure, to increase its capacity

The King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam has achieved a new record for container throughput on a single vessel, handling an impressive 20,645 TEUs on the COSCO SHIPPING AQUARIUS 036E.

This milestone highlights the port’s pivotal role in bolstering trade and the logistics sector, in line with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS). The achievement underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to becoming a global logistics hub.

Mawani, the Saudi Ports Authority, reported continuous infrastructure expansion at the port to boost capacity. In 2024, the port received 21 quay and RTG cranes through commercial contracts with Saudi Global Ports (SGP), valued at US$1.87 billion.

Additionally, SGP signed a contract with SANY, a leading Chinese manufacturer, to supply 80 electric trucks—the largest single contract globally for electric trucks.

Mawani also reported a record container throughput of 292,612 TEUs in May 2024. King Abdulaziz Port serves as a critical gateway for goods entering the eastern and central regions of the Kingdom, with rail connections to the Riyadh dry port. The port features 43 fully equipped berths, with a handling capacity of up to 105 million tons of cargo and containers.
