June 25th, is celebrated as the International Day of the Seafarer. This special day was created by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010 to recognize the significant role seafarers play in meeting our day-to-day needs and supporting the global economy.

The Day of the Seafarer is a chance to say “thank you” to these men and women who brave the open seas while working for months on end away from their families, to enable global trade and transport of all kinds of sea cargo.

Attacks on commercial shipping cannot be justified and on this day we honour those seafarers who have lost their lives in the recent Red Sea shipping attacks and send condolences to their families.

United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres marked the day, saying: “Seafarers are vital in ensuring a seamless flow of essential goods that eventually make it into markets, homes, and onto our tables...

"But their own lives have been put on the line in the face of grave threats. Let us together salute them for their essential work and support their safety.”

Ships carry nearly 90% of the world's goods and it is the professionalism and dedication of over two million seafarers that ensures these goods are transported and delivered quickly and safely.
