SABIC Agri-Nutrients (SABIC AN) and Aramco have successfully transported the world’s first consignment of certified clean blue ammonia to Ulsan, South Korea. The ammonia was bought by long-standing South Korean customer Lotte Fine Chemical (LFC).

The 25,000 metric tonnes aboard the Seasurfer shipped from Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd Industrial Port mark a milestone for a low-carbon alternative to conventional grey ammonia for the global industry.

SABIC Agri-Nutrients (SABIC AN) and Aramco received their certification for clean blue hydrogen production earlier in the year from TUV Rheinland. A large part of the CO2 emitted in producing this ammonia will be offset by carbon emission savings made downstream.

Abdulrahman Shamsaddin, SABIC AN CEO said: “We are constantly looking for ways to deliver value to our customers by offering low-carbon solutions.

“Current global industry challenges relating to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions requires us to continually accelerate the pace of innovation to further strengthen our sustainability commitment.”

Kim Yong-seok, CEO of LOTTE Fine Chemical, added: “We believe that this shipment of clean (blue) ammonia will help lay the foundations for a new era for ammonia.

“LOTTE Fine Chemical would devote continued efforts in making Korea the hub for clean energy in Asia.”
