During the second session of the TLME Future-Proof Technologies Conference held recently in Dubai, conference moderator Lars Jensen asked the Director of Portwise, and logistics industry tech guru, Dr Yvo Saanen, how they were addressing the challenges posed to the electrification of port operations by rising sea levels and possible flooding of terminals.
Dr. Saanen said that quay walls at most ports were built 30 or 40 years ago and there was a backlog in enhancing the height of quay walls. Construction for raising the heights now would create significant disruptions in port operations.
Dr Saanen went on to point out that apart from flooding, in the Middle East region, there was a challenge posed by condensation that can affect all kinds of electronic cabinets in terminals.
Referring to the standardisation of measurements and related data in the industry, Dr. Saanen said the technology available today allowed us to at least measure the big parameters so you can make better assessments between the different modes of operations.
