Massive Container Vessel Runs Aground in Suez Canal Blocking Traffic

Marine traffic halted in both directions

TLME News Service

A 400-meter-long Evergreen containership has run aground in the narrowest portion of the Suez Canal blocking traffic for the last 24 hours.

The Suez Canal sees approximately 12% of world trade volumes pass through it every year. Tugboats are presently attempting to move the giant Rotterdam=bound vessel but with little success so far.

According to a Reuters report the ship "was suspected of being hit by a sudden strong wind, causing the hull to deviate from waterway and accidentally hit the bottom and run aground."

Oil tankers and cargo ships continue to pile up outside the canal gates. Menawhile, the Suez Canal Authority is diverting ships whose sizes can be accomodated to the older channel.
