Jeddah Islamic Port Smashes Monthly Container Record

Big rise in TEU shows a promising future for Jeddah

TLME News Service

Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Islamic Port has smashed its highest container throughput in a month by processing 473,676 TEU in June 2023, a 16% surge over the 406,913 TEU it recorded in June 2022.

Such as result shows the changing nature of regional port power, as well as the ongoing international growth of Saudi Arabia, which means more people and more trade.

Jeddah Islamic Port, which is located on the Red Sea between the international east-west shipping lane (via the Suez Canal), is now the second-largest and second-busiest port in the Arab world behind DP World's Jebel Ali in Dubai.

A ''Top Ten' Port

The recent achievement comes during major development plans from the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) which aim to upgrade and expand the Red Sea Hub.

The improvements include a nine-billion-riyal concession with DP World to upgrade capacity at the South Container Terminal to 13 million TEU, laying out a vision for an abundant future.

The upgrade is in line with its long term objectives of positioning Jeddah as a "top ten port" and fulfilling the ambitions of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS) that seek to transform Saudi Arabia into a global logistics destination.
