As the European holiday season is winding up and demand for air travels soars Lufthansa pilots have declared a strike with nearly 800 flights cancelled. Lufthansa Cargo operations will also have limited operations today because of the strike.
Lufthansa labour union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) has called for 5000 pilots to stage a 24-hour walkout as the latest round of wage related negotiations with Lufthansa management have failed once again.
The strike has left thousands of passengers and several tonnes of airfreight stranded at airports around the world.
According to a Reuters report the VC is demanding a 5.5% hike in wages as Germany sees the highest inflation in 50 years with food and energy prices reaching unprecedented levels.
Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings is also faced with similar demands from its pilots. Negotiations on the same are ongoing at the moment.
