Emirates SkyCargo has transported around 23% of Sri Lankan trade via air in the 2017/18 trade year, a statement from Emirates said.
Emirates transported 27,000 tonnes of cargo from Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2017-18.
The contents of the deliveries are mostly edible fish, fruit and vegetables, flowers and garments.
Emirates Rebrands with ‘Fly Better’
The UAE liner offers 28 flights from and into Colombo on a weekly basis, utilising Boeing 777 aircraft.
Emirates Cargo Manager Sri Lanka and the Maldives Kapila Santhapriya, said: “In 2017-18, Emirates SkyCargo carried more than 7,500 tonnes of fish, which is about 40% of the 17,500 tonnes of edible fish that Sri Lanka exported to the USA and Europe.
“Our flight frequencies and our global network reach from Colombo support the local fish and seafood exports industry.”
The types of fish exported on Emirates SkyCargo include tuna, shrimp, prawns, crabs and lobster to markets including the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands and USA.
Sri Lankan fisheries exports are valued at close to US$250 million.
